How to Get Better Size in Onions

Establishing a good stand

In order to maximize profits a grower needs to keep several factors in mind: at planting, the concern should be to balance fertility levels in the soil with a reliable soil test, to adjust fertility and mineral requirements according to expert consultation, and to get the plants off to a strong start with a good starter fertilzer and Vitazyme. The starter/Vitazyme combination or Vitazyme alone can be placed directly in furrow with the drench. If the seeds are planted dry, then mix the Vitazyme with the herbicide and spray it on, either pre plant or post emergence. The idea is to get the Vitazyme on early to push the plants through the flag stage, where they are vulnerable to blow outs, wash outs, and catastrophic loss to disease, and into the 2-3 leaf stage.

Growing Strong tops

The next order of business is to grow strong tops. This is the factory that will captury sunlight, convert it along with CO2 and water to sugars, which are converted into compounds that become the bulb. An application of Vitazyme at the 3-4 leaf stage will promote vigorous top growth and set up conditions for the next phase, the bulbing stage.

Sizing the bulbs

When the plants begin to produce a bulb apply Vitazyme with your normal cover spray. This will trigger the metabolism of the plant to channel it's energy into the bulb and begin it's race to maturity. To get the best size and uniformity from your crop, apply a Vitazyme a fourth time, about 2 weeks before the tops go down. Onions will put on a lot of size during these last two weeks given adequate moisture.

The rate for all applications is 13oz/acre ( 1 liter/hectare). Remember, you can mix Vitazyme with all your other chemicals and fertilizers to eliminate application costs.

When using Vitazyme overall production costs can be lowered by reducing nitrogen input. See "Improvement in Fertilizer Efficiency with Vitazyme".
